Is Post-Coup Thailand A Safe Place To Visit?

Posted by pat 11 Jun 2010 Comments Off

On September 19th, the Thai military overthrew Prime Minister Taksin Shinawatra while he was on an official visit to the United Nations. The coup was quick, bloodless and long overdue. The new government is being installed and democracy will prevail.

So, should you cancel your travel plans to Thailand? Absolutely not. Thailand is still a great place to visit and if you hadn’t seen the coup on TV, you would never have known it happened.

Life goes on in the Land of Smiles with the only difference being a new Prime Minister being installed. General Surayud was appointed the new PM, has selected his cabinet and restored calm to the country. Free elections will commence next year.

Apart from the newly appointed government, nothing has changed in Thailand. You can still go shopping, dine in some great restaurants and ride elephants. The Thai people will still welcome you with open arms, smile all day long and treat you to the best vacation you have ever had.

In addition, you will get to see the most spectacular airport in all of Asia. Suvarnabhumi Airport opened on September 28th and is a sight to behold. It is located 50 kilometers south of the “old airport” – Don Muang. So, if you are planning on visiting Pattaya, your ride from the airport to Pattaya should be approximately 30 – 45 minutes faster.

If you have plans to visit Bangkok or any of the other cities in Thailand, there is no need to cancel. If you have never been, now is a good time to go.

Exercise the normal cautions you would on any trip to a foreign country. Register with the state department or your local embassy. Don’t flash your money or jewelry, use the buddy system, and be aware of your surroundings. Be safe and have a great vacation.

Where To Relex For Holiday In Pattaya Thailand

Posted by pat 07 Jun 2010 Comments Off

The following article covers a topic that has recently moved to center stage–at least it seems that way. If you’ve been thinking you need to know more about it, here’s your opportunity.

What do you do after a few days in Bangkok to get away from the traffic, pollution, noise and crowds of people? Head for one of the many resorts of Thailand. They provide a haven for you to completely relax in and forget the troubles of the outside world.

In Pattaya, there are a number of resorts that probably do that, but one that we’re sure about is the hotel Resort on Dongtan Beach, Jomtien Pattaya . Its large grounds provide wooded areas, a private beach and various recreational facilities so that there are plenty of options available for any visitor to relax and enjoy themselves. The site is large enough so that sounds from the outside world never make it inside the resort to distract one from the pursuit of peace and relaxation.

If your pattaya facts are out-of-date, how will that affect your actions and decisions? Make certain you don’t let important pattaya information slip by you.

Our own stay, on a recent weekend, left us rejuvenated and ready to face the world again after indulging in as many of the resort’s facilities as we could. After settling into our luxurious room on the main level of the hotel (which included a beautiful ocean view looking south down the beach) we first started with a workout in the fitness club.

This well-equipped club had everything we needed, including treadmills, exercise bikes, free weights and machines to get a good workout. This was followed by a visit to the steam room for some further cleansing of the body before we left the club. This is a great way to relieve tension and get in the frame of mind to enjoy the weekend and we heartily recommend it. We visited the health club each day we were at the resort so that our regular weekly exercise schedule didn’t suffer a bit even though we weren’t in the city. And, if you’d like to learn something new during your stay you can try one of the classes that are offered on a regular basis.

Of course, after a day of working out and swimming next to the clean ocean air of Pattaya, you’ll develop a healthy appetite and you’re in the right place for being hungry. There are three different dining outlets in the resort that offer three distinct dining experiences. For a more relaxed, casual type of meal try the Cascade Cafe which has recently been remodeled along with the main lobby. Here you’ll find a great buffet breakfast along with an international, Thai and Chinese ala carte menu.

There’s a lot to understand about pattaya. We were able to provide you with some of the facts above, but there is still plenty more to write about in subsequent articles. http://www.rabbitresort.com/

Endless Happiness at Pattaya Beach Hotels

Posted by pat 01 Jun 2010 Comments Off

Pattaya Beach is really popular with tourists, not only with Thai travelers, but also with people from all over the world. Pattaya has gained its reputation from the beauty of its beaches as well as the variety of beach activities that are on offer. However, there are differences in terms of the style of travel of foreign travelers from different regions.

Firstly, we have to understand the nature and characteristics of the travelers. I have been a tourist guide for almost ten years, working in Pattaya and many other parts of the country. The differences in the behavior of tourists sometimes depends upon the region that they come from. For example, travelers from the USA and Europe are likely to prefer a relaxing trip rather than a sightseeing trip or taking part in many kinds of activities. Tourist behavior also seems to depend upon the climate of the region that they come from, with tourists that come from regions that have long winters tending to relax in countries that are in a tropical zone like Indonesia (Bali), Thailand and other such countries. Meanwhile tourists from the Asian countries seem to enjoy activities other than lying on the beach and sunbathing.

The number of tourists from western countries who visit the city of Pattaya is around one million per year, and in response to this the hotels and resorts in Pattaya have to provide excellent service and facilities to attract Western customers and to survive in this very competitive market.

A beach hotel is a hotel that is located close to the beach, or one that has its own private beach available for guests. It is a top priority for foreign travelers to find hotel accommodation that has a private beach for them to relax on. Fortunately, there are quite a number of luxurious five star hotels in Pattaya which have private beaches to ensure that guests have an enjoyable holiday.

In general, these hotels have online booking systems of their own, as well as having deals with travel agents or online hotel booking websites. Travelers who have to plan their trip in advance may have to book their accommodation through a local travel agent or make hotel reservations through websites. The fact is that it is really important for them to make sure in advance of the accommodation and facilities that they will be coming to. If they want to book a hotel where they can relax on a cozy, private beach, they will most likely need to see a picture of the accommodation and the beach that is owned by the hotel. This is because sometimes there is a misunderstanding about the location and condition of the hotel.

It is sometimes the case that the online booking system does not provide a complete view of the hotel, especially so in the case of the small hotel booking websites which usually provide only basic pictures of the accommodation which are sometimes out of date. Therefore, you as a traveler may have to visit the hotel official websites to see the complete pictures of the hotel before you decide to make a reservation. Also, if possible you may have to call the hotel to check the room availability, especially if you plan to go during high season, which is about December to April.

Land & Property Law in Thailand

Thailand is an incredible country much famed for its serenity and rich culture. In fact, the country is much popular among the tourists, and is now the number one tourist spot in South-East Asia. With its mind blowing scenery, stupendous beaches, idyllic tropical islands, and a myriad of attractions covering palaces, ancient shrines, interesting museums, historic monuments, and places of cultural significance, Thailand has been drawing holidaymakers from across the world per year.

Of which many of the people, especially Europeans and Americans, settle down here permanently, inspired by the incredibility of the place. Some westerns have even chosen certain destinations in Thailand such as Koh Samui, Pattaya, and Phuket, to spend their retirement life.

Factors such as exceptional low prices and excellent investment potential have also lured large number of people to invest in the country’s property market. All these have led to increased demand for property in Thailand. Property market in Thailand is highly active, with a number of options, ranging from land and houses to condominiums, villas, and serviced apartments. Discussed further in this article are laws as well as procedures involved in connection with owning a property in Thailand.

The laws with regard to owning a property in the country is quite confusing. A foreigner cannot easily own a property in Thailand. In other words, Thai law strictly prohibits a foreigner to own a freehold land in the country. However, there are certain loopholes in the law regarding this issue. A foreigner can own a land or property in the country through a number of ways such as land leases, company ownership, investments, and above all, through Thai spouse.

Land Leases – Although Thai law prohibits land ownership rights to people, foreigners are allowed to hold 100% interest in a land lease in the country. In other words, land lease is one of the simplest as well as straightforward options for a foreigner to acquire a property in Thailand. According to the Thai lease law, a maximum of 30-year lease year is provided, and that too with the option to renew the lease for an additional period of 30 years.

Additionally, lands for commercial as well as industrial purposes could be leased up to a period of 50 years, with options for further extension of lease. All kinds of land lease must be registered with the Land Development. However, it is not required to register leases up to three years. It has been made mandatory to register any kind of lease renewal that has been agreed upon with the land owners at the local land office.

Company Ownership – Registered companies in Thailand with majority Thai ownership could buy land in Thailand. In general, only Thai majority companies are allowed to own land in the country. However, in certain instances, the Board of Investment (BOI) allows a foreign registered company registered in the country to own a land for a short period of time.

Thai Spouse – A Thai wife of a foreigner is allowed to own a land or property in the country in her own name. This option is a very good way to own to a property in Thailand if there is not any marital problem between the couples.

However, it has been made mandatory for the couples to sign declarations with the Land Department. This in turn is to specify that the funds used are the property of the Thai spouse. But, it may sometimes become a problem in case of divorce. In such a situation, an expertly prepared prenuptial agreement may prove helpful for the non-Thai spouse.

Investment – As per the Thai property law, a foreigner is allowed to purchase a limited amount of land, on the basis of investment of about 40 million bahts for five consecutive years, provided if the land is for residential purpose.

Despite any other aforesaid options, one of the best ways to purchase a property in Thailand is via the purchase of a condominium unit. The Thai government does not impose any kind of restrictions on foreigners to own a condo unit in Pattaya, except for some requirements to be met under the Condominium Act (1979), such as bringing in 100% of funds for the purchase of condo unit in foreign currency and recording of it by a Thai bank on a Foreign Exchange Transaction Form (FETF), which in turn is considered an evidence to submit it to the Land Department.

A number of firms are now in the scenario to help you deal with the legal procedures in connection with the owning of a land or property in the country. They undertake a plethora of services such as purchase as well as sale agreement, asset purchase transactions, transfer and lien registrations, title searches, and industrial estates.

Pattaya Real Estate

When you think of Thailand houses you can imagine traditional ones, having a huge room, used as dining room and bedroom for the whole family. Thailand people used to believe that in this room live as well their dead relatives’ spirits. What a crowd! Furthermore, Thailand traditional houses are built for rainy weather. They have tall and tilt roofs which allow rain water flow down. There are wooden shutters for airing and for isolation against rain. More houses are built on wooden pillars not to be taken by flood. The space created under the house is often used for rising animals, like pigs or poultry.

But, when you think of Pattaya you can imagine irresistible combinations of natural beauties: the beach, the sea, the sun, palm trees, briefly an exotic destination which is the ideal choice for enjoying relaxing moments, or for spending all your life there. What could be more beautiful than lying in a hammock and admiring marvelous landscapes, enjoying a tropical cocktail under the palm trees shadow and then to get refreshed in the crystal clear water?

Pattaya is a perfect destination for tanning amateurs, for swimming, shopping for the trendiest brands, having dinner in the most sophisticated restaurants, enjoying the most refined cuisines, associated with selected wines, followed by night life in modern clubs, or golf or yachting courses.

Travel Light

Posted by pat 21 May 2010 Comments Off

It is a time of year when the local weather improves and (hopefully) less rain plus cooler temperatures inspires the travel bug to bite more frequently even among residents. Of course the number of public holidays during the latter end of the year is virtually nil, so working residents are limited to short weekend trips. Number one destination for many gay travellers is Pattaya.

There are many reasons for this, nothing to do with the dirty sand and water either! I have a personal distaste for Pattaya, which stops just short of outright hatred. My recurring fantasy is that one of these days when we are leaving the place, having spent my annual one night penance there, my boyfriend will glance in the rear view mirror and be turned into a pillar of salt. I then see fire raining from the heavens and doing a Sodorn and Gomorrah number on the place, sparing a few righteous places such as Bruno’s and the Hard Rock Cafe. Alas this is only a dream, and anyway I’m rambling again when I should be concentrating on the subject at hand which is gay tourism.

There are quite a few travel agencies out there who specialise in tourism aimed at a specifically gay clientele. I have never made use of any of their services and I don’t intend to. I really fail to see that what they offer is significantly different from what any other travel agency has, with the possible exception that a specialised service charges more!

Luckily in Thailand we do have a couple of agencies who I think are fair and honest in their dealings. I refer to Ragoncastle and Utopia Tours both of which have excellent helpful websites with tons of FREE information for any gay tourist visiting this country!

Let’s not kid ourselves for a moment for many tourists whatever their inclination, top of their priority list is ”where can I get laid”? If anyone asks me this question I simply reply that Bangkok is the place if that’s all you are interested in and all the bars, discos and baby was allegedly stolen by a wild dog whilst on a picnic near Ayers Rock, not my cup of tea at all.

However ‘The architect and the emperor of Assyria” is another matter! A plane crashes on a remote island. One man stumbles from the wreckage. But he is not alone. Who is this other man, how did he get here, and will he make a good Bloody Mary? This is a high camp comedy and will certainly be more cheerful than “Lindy”!

My favorite just has to be “I Love The Nightlife.” For one night only, the Sydney Town Hall will be ringing with the huge sounds of the world’s best gay and lesbian ensembles performing their best repertoire. With over a hundred performers, these ensembles are committed to bringing pride and understanding through their energetic and infectious music.

Now that is what Gay Pride should be all about!

While I am talking about pride, I may as well mention that Bangkok Pride will be having an event in September, apart from their Koh Kret cruise that is. It was described to me as a celebrity waiter event and I was asked if I would be interested in participating. Mmm, I think I’ll have to discuss it with my manager!

Did anyone ever wonder about the symbol of Gay Pride the Rainbow flag and it’s origins?

The first Rainbow Flag was designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, a San Francisco artist, who created the flag in response to a local activist’s call for a community symbol. He designed a flag with eight stripes: pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Representing, respectively: sexuality, life, healing, sun, nature, art, harmony and spirit. He dyed and sewed the material for the first flag himself. Due to the fact that the color hot pink was not commercially available the flag was reduced to 7 colors for mass production.

In November 1978, San Francisco’s gay community was stunned when the city’s first openly gay supervisor, Harvey Milk, was assassinated. Wishing to demonstrate the gay community’s strength and solidarity in the aftermath of this tragedy, the 1979 Pride Parade Committee decided to use Baker’s flag. The committee eliminated the indigo stripe so they could divide the colors evenly along the parade route – three colors on one side of the street and three on the other. Soon the six colors were incorporated into a six-striped version that became popularized and that, today, is recognized by the International Congress of Flag Makers. I bet that’s news for most of you out there!

Lain Duncan Smith, leader of Britain’s Conservative Party, has given his support to Alan Duncan (no relation) ,who on July 29 became the party’s first member of Parliament to announce that he is gay.

Duncan Smith wrote to Duncan saying that his coming out would not harm his political career. (No, really?)

Duncan Smith said, “What you have done is honest and will not affect you in any way politically in the future.” (Well I’m not holding my breath for him to be party leader or even PM.) Could such a thing ever happen in enlightened Thailand? I doubt it!
